We kept seeing this infomercial for the Live Butterfly Garden and every time Noah saw it he told us he wanted to "go there." Pretty sure he didn't understand the advertisement but one thing we were sure of was that he would love it, so we bought one. It arrived a few days later. One cup o' caterpillars and one butterfly habitat.
The caterpillars needed zero care (my kind of pet) and grew exponentially over the next week. One day they all traveled to the top of their container, attached themselves to the mesh fabric, hung upside down, and formed chrysalises. It was truly an amazing thing to witness. We all know that caterpillars build a cocoon and then turn into butterflies, but to actually see it happen made me truly appreciate just how amazing God's creation is. These little guys literally went from a fuzzy worm to a hard chrysalis in a matter of 30 minutes. Unreal.
After about a week the chrysalises began to turn a very dark color and we began to see the body and wings showing through the thinning cocoon. One morning I looked in the habitat and we had our first butterfly. We really wanted to witness them emerging from their chrysalis but, unfortunately, we always missed it; they're quick little suckers. By the next day we had five beautiful painted lady butterflies.
I wasn't sure that Noah would understand how his caterpillars went from worm to butterfly, but he really did. He took ownership of his five pets, and was insistent on being the one to feed them fresh orange slices and sugar water every day.
We kept them in their habitat for about five days and then Noah decided that he was ready to let them go. At first they didn't want to leave but Noah was able to "encourage" them out of their habitat.
The whole experience was well worth the money and since buying the Live Butterfly Garden I have been telling all my friends that they should get one too. I think that I enjoyed it more than Noah. We will definitely be ordering some more caterpillars in the near future.
